Handling the Big Jets by D.P. Davies
'Handling the Big Jets' offers an explanation of the significant differences in flying qualities between jet and piston engine transport aeroplanes.
It was an immediate success when it was first published because it removed many of the mysteries which had previously surrounded the flying qualities of big jets.
Written by a former chief test pilot of the United Kingdom Airworthiness Authority it is an invaluable work of reference for all pilots, engineers and enthusiasts.
Flight International Magazine reviewed 'Handling the Big Jets' thus: "this is no dry textbook. It is a tremendous, but notably readable, vade-mecum of jet transport flying qualities and design characteristics intended primarily for pilots who have yet to make the transition to jets, but which is packed with information of value to the most experienced of jet captains."
This book can truly be described as "the best of it's kind in the world".
Packed with photographs, line drawings, tables and graphs.
This edition includes chapters on the Boeing 747 and asymetric flight as well as as up-to-date revisions to the text.

Human Performance and Limitations in Aviation
This book, written by two pilots, one of whom is also an aviation medical practitioner, provides a readable introduction to the basic concepts of human factors in aviation. It is a text that is widely used by flying and ground training schools worldwide and this latest edition includes an important section on basic aviation psychology, as well as topics on physiology and high altitude environment and health maintenance.
It has been further expanded to include more detail on the physiology of hypoxia, as well as deeper coverage of principles of aviation psychology.
Human factors are cited as a major cause in over 70% of accidents and it is widely agreed that a better understanding of human capabilities and limitations - both physical and psychological - would help reduce human error and improve flight safety.
The late Ron Campbell, Executive Chairman of AOPA UK, was a member of the ECAC Working Group and JAA Flight Crew Licensing Committee responsible for the harmonisation of pilot training and licensing in Europe. Pamela Campbell, who has also contributed to the book, is a former commercial pilot and flying instructor and is currently the International AOPA delegate on the JAA Flight Crew Licensing Committee.
Michael Bagshaw is Head of Medical Services for British Airways. He is a current professional pilot, flying instructor and examiner and a recognised authority on human factors in aviation. He was formerly Senior Medical Officer Pilot and specialist in aviation medicine at the RAF Institute of Aviation Medicine, Farnborough, UK.

Destination Disaster by Andrew Brookes
In 'Destination Disaster' Andrew Brookes investigates the causes and effects of many recent aviation disasters.
The book is a serious examination of the background behind the most dramatic an noteworthy of recent flying accidents, including the Air France Concorde crash at Paris in 2000, the loss if golfer Payne Stewart's Learjet in 1999 and the momentous events of 11th Septermber 2001.
Drawing upon his own flying career, the author shows both the causes of the accidents and what is being done to stop such accidents from happening again. Although flight safety is rarely straightforward, the accidents are deliberately examined in a non-controversial and objective way and the author stresses the safety of contemporary flight.
However there reamains an element of risk, as in any other part of life and the book is a timely examination of the issues of safety raised in contemporary air travel.
